They took a wild card gamble on Newton. It's been somewhat mixed but for the most part one can see his career as a starter is pretty much finished. Perhaps his career is also over after this season.
What did they pay him, like 1 million? Was worth the shot to catch lightening in a bottle at that price, imo.
It was pretty dumb because even if he has a good year, there isn't much long-term upside to Cam being your QB. You just waste a year. Now you gotta start all over at the position in the offseason.
Should've taken a long-term approach and drafted a QB, tried to develop him rather than hope everything works out and you go 9-7 with Cam. Then if that doesn't work, it is what it is, but atleast it is trying to build something sustainable.
I mean, what is Newton, only like 30 or 31 i think. If he played at a pro bowl level why not sign him to a multi year deal?
He is still young, at a qb age.
But he is definitely done and damaged goods at this point.
Not all 31's created equal though, even in his prime, he was a physical specimen which was his main attribute. Wasn't going to sustain that into his mid 30's.
Assuming BB just figured he would be a decent stopgap this year rather than go a young QB and potentially go 4-12, which he likely didn't wanna do in Year 1 Post-Brady. Which is what it is, but now you gotta start over again.
Never was going to age into an accurate pocket passer, especially given modern QB stat baseline you need to achieve to be considered solid.
Wonder what QB Bill goes after next year?
Wentz?
